The dog days of August

Sirius rises late in the dark, liquid sky
On summer nights, star of stars,
Orion’s Dog they call it, brightest
Of all, but an evil portent, bringing heat
And fevers to suffering humanity.
Homer’s Illiad

A collection of images with no particular theme other than they were taken in August, a wicked month:

... Ryal

... again (Ryal - as yesterday)

The fields near ...

Thistledown ...

Listen, do you want to know a secret?
Do you promise not to tell, whoa, oh
Closer, let me whisper in your ear
Say the words you long to hear

Listen ...

    Love the third one!

Thanks Cate – the reference to the dog days of August was inspired by your ‘Those Damned Doldrums’ post.

I hear ya, my friend! Fall is coming!!!

Wonderful – Some excellent images here to celebrate the passing month of August. Autumn beckons and will the motorcyclist press on to new horizons? 🙂

    • northumbrianlight · August 25, 2015

Many thanks – the onset of Autumn has certainly got me investigating bikes with better weather protection but the Triumph will not be sold! 🙂

I should hope not… Something big and throbbing as one of my old friends used to say 🙂

A great set of images. The first two are my favorites…Cheers!

Many thanks, mine too – anything with the Bonnie in looks good to me 😉

I like them all. Autumn is on its way here, too, but I think summer will make a resurgence before fall actually arrives.

Many thanks Janet – hoping for an Indian summer come September. Seems only fair given the number of monsoons we have had 🙂

Love the first one, Robin. Real sense of open road.

    • northumbrianlight · August 26, 2015

Thanks Jean – I like that road too – it has the feel of the mid-west which is not bad for humble Ryal in Northumberland.

Lovely images! Here comes the sun again! Enjoy the remainder of Summer, Robin 🙂

      Thanks Jo

      “Here comes the sun
      Here comes the sun,
and I say, It’s all right”

An eclectic mix of photos. Love the field, especially. I’ve been cut off from the world for 2 weeks, so just now able to catch up with your posts.

Thanks Julie, good to hear from you. I assumed you were travelling off the beaten path again – if so, I look forward to the posts.

It’s coming, it’s coming…Love the fields. The scent of ripeness and harvest.

    • northumbrianlight · September 4, 2015

It is, it is but, too quickly – the temperature drop in Northumberland makes it feel like November already 😦

      • Leya · September 4, 2015

I visited one of the islands here last week – and was sent right off to autumn. No rain – bone dry – had turned all the trees into yellow and some had let go of their leaves already. Not fun.

Wonderful dog days images…although this year the temperatures were setting our teeth chattering rather than being bothered with heat 🙂

    • northumbrianlight · September 7, 2015

Quite right – I got thoroughly drenched and very cold on my trip to the Traigh Open near Arisaig last month – the 2nd August felt more like November 😦

      • greenmackenzie · September 8, 2015

Summer has come at last though….the hills are sun drenched. Summers last fling 🙂

      • northumbrianlight · September 8, 2015

Same here for two days but not today 😦

Thank you for capturing the ethereal beauty of August. Such a magical month. Love this precious post. The images are uniquely yours. Enjoying your signature style of composition and the power of the words.
